Local Author Publishes eBook
Lincoln City, OR, September 6, 2001 – Local author Linda Melin, who
writes as Linda Suzane, announced the publication of her first eBook by
Kudlicka Publishing. The Murder Game is a romantic mystery about a
murder mystery game designer’s whose game goes murderously wrong. It is
set in a lonely mansion on the flanks of Mt. Tamaplais in California.
The Murder Game took her ten years to write and four more years
to find a publisher. "The traditional New York publishers are very
closed to new writers," said Linda Melin. "I started exploring
the eBook market and finally submitted my book to an e-Publisher. I got an
immediate response that they had received my query. In a few days, the
editor emailed me that she would like to see the completed manuscript.
Another few days and I heard that they wanted to publish it. I was in
shock."
An eBook is short for electronic book. It comes in a digital format and
is read on your computer or with a special electronic reading device. The
Murder Game is available in .pdf format which is read with a free
Acrobat Reader. It is the same format that the U.S. government uses for
its online documents. It is available from Kudlicka Publishing, as a
download for $5.95 or on CDRom.
When asked if being published as an eBook was really being published,
Linda Melin said, "I don’t see any difference. I spent the same
amount of time writing it. It was professionally edited. It has an ISBN
and is copyrighted the same as any book. The publisher is not a vanity
press, but a legitimate, royalty paying publisher. The only differences I
can see is that no trees were destroyed to create this book, it won’t go
out of print after a few weeks like most romances, and I am getting a much
higher percentage of royalty."
With last year’s exclusive publication as an eBook of Riding the
Bullet by Stephen King, popularity of this format has grown. EBooks
have long been the choice for romance readers because of the willingness
of e-publishers to experiment and publish cross-genre novels giving the
readers good reading choices beyond the narrow definition some of the
romance lines. One of the biggest selling points is the reduction in cost,
since digital costs less to produce than paper. More and more books are
becoming available in eBook editions.
Linda Melin currently teaches "Write and Publish Online" at
Oregon Coast Community College. She is an ardent believer in the Internet.
She has her own website, writes a bimonthly column at Suite101.com, and is
the founder of Beach Net Writers Co-op, an online community helping Oregon
Coast writers use the power of the Internet to expand their careers. For
more information visit Beach Net Writers Co-op’s website at
Linda’s other interests include creating murder mystery games. She is
currently working on two games, one based on the mystery game in her novel
The Murder Game. She plans to start an online business selling
mystery games.

Linda Suzane has murdered a cheating agent, sat in church on a Sunday
morning and plotted how to kill her husband-minister, hosted a meeting of
a group of International Killers, and for her daughter's sixteenth
birthday allowed her to kill whomever she pleased. No, not in mystery
novels, but in murder mystery games, games that she designed and hosted.
She even wrote an article for Writer's Digest Magazine, "Writing for
Fun: Creating a Mystery Game." So when she began to look for a topic
to write about, she naturally turned to something she knew. The
Murder Game is a romantic mystery about a novelist who also
creates mystery games. The story is set in a mansion on the flanks of Mt.
Tamaplais in California. She took her inspiration for the location from
the time she spent at the Ralston L. White Retreat Center in Mill Valley. The
Murder Game, her first eBook, was being published by Kudlicka
Publishing in July 2001. After Kudlicka Publishing became defunct, Linda
began searching for a new publisher. She is very pleased to be working
with Double Dragon Publishing.
Linda now lives with her husband on the beautiful Oregon coast with
four domineering cats and a room full of dragons. She is busy working on
a mystery game, Killers International, which should be
published by Kudlicka Publishing as a downloadable mystery game this fall.
Her next novel is a fantasy murder mystery.

When Lawrence Van Hise offers Gwen Wilson $10,000 to create a mystery
game in honor of his birthday, Gwen agrees. Gwen's mother once worked as
the Van Hise housekeeper before her death twenty years ago, and Gwen is
looking forward to returning to the beautiful mansion on the flanks of Mt.
Tamaplais. Before Gwen can explain to Lawrence who she is, he tells her of
a housekeeper who stole a jade statue. Gwen is shocked to learn the thief
was her mother and sets out to prove that her mother innocent, only to
uncover more secrets from the past, long buried secrets about her mother's
death and her relationship with Lawrence Van Hise. To complicate matters,
Gwen's feelings for Hunter, Lawrence's son, confuse her. When she was 13
and Hunter 16, he was her first crush. Having matured into devastatingly
handsome man, he still has the power to send her heart and mind reeling.
Is he really attracted to her or merely using her as his father used her
mother? Is his offer to help real or is he merely trying to protect his
father? Then the night of the party, Lawrence Van Hise is found dead, and
it appears someone is trying to frame Gwen for murder.

Book Reviews, Reader Comments, and
Interviews
Excellent, well written narrative. Writer Suzane has produced a
gripping tale filled with the twists and turns found in Christine Spindler’s
‘Faces of Fears’ along with the suspense filled good writing of
William Manchee in his Stan Turner Mystery series. The Murder Game
is a book which will keep you turning the pages. With each aha! Now I know
who did it, you will find a fresh red herring to throw you into confusion.
Faced paced action, believable characters and dialogue insure The
Murder Game will find a home with those who enjoy a good mystery
flavored with just the right amount of romance, deceit and suspense. Highly recommended

THE MURDER GAME is an enjoyable reading experience, once you move past
the somewhat choppy sentences in the first half of the book. The pace
rapidly accelerates in the last half of the novel, as Suzane hits her
stride and this reader felt more of a connection with the characters. The
story is a little predicable in places, but also contains enough twists
and turns to make the reader dizzy.
The emotional connection between Gwen and Hunter seemed, at times,
almost a tangible entity, which displays Suzane's gift for breathing life
into her characters. The character's sexual chemistry was a nice blend,
but Suzane deprives her readers of any actual fulfillment - she leads up
to a romantic encounter and then immediately skips ahead to after the act.
A fast-paced who-done-it that will leave you anticipating the next
scene, THE MURDER GAME delivers mystery with a splash of romance. -- Julie

Attention Mystery Lovers and Romance Readers! This is a tale for
you. A lovely balance of both mystery and romance should appeal to a
wide audience. Easy to read, provides great entertainment. You
won't want to put it down until the end...Set in an isolated mansion in California complete with a nasty storm
that cuts them off from the outside, this tale will keep you hooked. The
author has constructed a compelling plot and intriguing characters.
Reminescent of Agatha Christie, this story manages to give the reader a
fresh look at an old subject, complete with twists and turns in the
plot. Look out for red herrings.
I highly recommend this as a fun read and wait to see what the talented
author's next offering will be. -- Anne K. Edwards
